Russian Imperial Treasures Icon
Framed and matted small icon painted in egg tempura on wood depicting St. Savatius, St. Vasili and St. Zosimus [7.75 x 4 cm], finely executed in the Novgorod tradition of the early 18th century. Part of an icon from the Feodorovski Cathedral, Tsarakoye Selo. Icon history is traced from the time of the pyramids with the oldest examples found today in Russian churches. Larger icons are usually painted on wooden plaques; the small, more personal were worn either about the neck or carried in the pocket. Gold lacquered frame is 46 x 31 cm., matted letter by Miss Kathrine Starr Oliver dated December 23, 1935, 26 x 16 cm, with the icon itself recessed within the glass framed presentation.
