INSCRIBED by the author to Winifred Westover, a Hollywood actress of the 1910s and 1920s and briefly wife of the famous actor/director William S. Hart. The inscription reads: "Long life and much vodka/To Winifred Helena Hart/w hopes to meet her in/Moscow or on the Volga/from Albert Rhys Williams/New Orleans/Jan. 28 '29." Williams has also written on title page next to an illustration of a Russian peasant "portrait of author/A.R.W." Small 8vo. 293 pp; some pages uncut.Laid in is a note along with an envelope addressed to 'William S. Hart & second note dated Dec. 31, '76 (both seem unrelated to the book). The fragile publisher's light grey illustrated wrappers in very good condition (short closed tears to lower spine; light, general wear & spotting). Williams was an American journalist, labor organizer, and publicist who wrote memoirs about the October Revolution of 1917 in Russia in which he was both witness and participant.
