N.d., circa early 1950s. 8vo. 25 by 18 cm. Unpaginated, 24 pp., plus wraps. With seventeen handsome, and elegant, color plates. The color plates, some of which are facing one another, all stand out for their single color backgrounds, and the printing process would appear to have been a hybrid combining photoplate and lithography and then colorized, achieving a richness of color that improves on the reality. The plates makes one perceive the bottles of liquor as almost sculptural, and rightly as objects of beauty independent of all else. The liquors are of all kinds, including of course Vodka but also a rich variety of cordials, brandies and dessert liquors. The bottles are sometimes displayed by themselves, but in a few plates there are fruit bowls and crystal goblets and glasses, all composed impeccably. Whatever one makes of the Soviet cultural landscape in general, it did attain high standards in some fields, and in a modest way, this trade catalogue is a proud reflection of its aesthetic achievement. Another thing setting this catalogue apart from the pedestrian is that all the pages of content are folded over in a Japanese style. The textured wraps have a light film of soiling, and light wear evident in its corners. Clean and bright within. Bookseller Inventory #
