About this Item

Dark brown cloth. 259 pp. With a frontispiece illustration. A fictional representation of life in the Southern United States, written in epistolary form and containing anecdotes portraying the lives of African-Americans in the South, as well as describing the lives of poor whites, connecting the two as a result of slavery (mentioned in the preface). While fiction, this work purports to draw on the author's own experiences. Emily Clemons Pearson was a 19th century author, writing several works on abolitionist and anti-slavery causes, as well as penning early works associated with the Millerite movement. POOR condition. Cloth very chipped and deteriorated along the spine, with loss. Other areas of chipping and presumed insect wear to the cloth on the front and rear covers. Covers faded, stained and soiled. Cloth scuffed and worn along the extremities. Staining and foxing to the first endpapers, with scattered staining and foxing throughout. Ownership signature present. Text block shaken and weak, with signatures loosening and somewhat tenuously holding on. See Sabin 59445 for record of the first edition. Bookseller Inventory # 008021
