Description:

Blue/green cloth as issued with title stamped in blind on the front cover and in gold on the spine; a very bright copy in Very Good condition or better; light rubbing at the corners and spine ends; top corner of the back board is mildly bumped; the stamping on the spine remains bright; Scribner's seal on the copyright page; type on pages 38, 248 and page number 90 remains strong and unbattered; a few leaves have creases from having the corners turned down; vertical crease running the length of the front free endpaper; a few leaves at the beginning have been roughly opened; otherwise a clean bright copy in uncommon dust jacket; dust jacket is separated at the rear joint as well as at the bottom of the spine; all pieces are held in place in a mylar cover though there is evidence of a few pieces of tape on the verso; piece missing at the top of the spine affecting the title (a facsimile has been laid in to give the book a better shelf presence); flap folds have some closed tears; the lips on the front panel illustration are battered indicating it came a bit later in the run. A nice copy in scarce dust jacket of Fitzgerald's third collection of short stories. While Fitzgerald is most remembered for his novels, in particular The Great Gatsby, he made his living by his stories which were published in the popular magazines of the day -- Saturday Evening Post, The Smart Set, American Mercury, and others. Scholars have argued that Fitzgerald used the short stories to work out themes in service of the novels that followed. While his short stories were typically far more popular than his novels, it was in his longer fiction that Fitzgerald felt he was practicing his art. All the Sad Young Men is the collection that followed The Great Gatsby which at its publication was a critical and commercial failure but is now thought to be Fitzgerald's most important work—indeed some have gone so far to call it the "great American novel." All the Sad Young Men is a masterful collection including "Absolution," often thought to be a false start to Gatsby as well as often anthologized "Winter Dreams." Bruccoli A12.I.a.
