About this Item

As indicated by the color stamping on the first page of the typescript, this was the originalmanuscript submitted for publication. The typescript was accepted for publication in THE MAGIC CARPET MAGAZINE (edited by Farnsworth Wright) and announced as forthcoming in the January, 1934 issue. Unfortunately the magazine folded with that issue which must've been a very sudden demise indeed, as it got as far as the typesetter's notations — the final stage before publication! REH had just signed on with agent, Otis Adelbert Kline, no doubt in the hopes of more expedient payment and broadening his publication base as there is a printed sticker in the upper l.h., corner — Submitted by Otis Adelbert Kline — an added bonus of having the Otis Adelbert Kline agency on the manuscript; and note too that upon this resubmission, "Sailor Costigan," is lined through and "Sailor Dorgan" is substitutted — nice to have two REH hero names in one manuscript! REH had had three stories previously published in MAGIC CARPET which probably accounted for adopting his pseudonym, Patrick Ervin, as his own name has been crossed through. and his pen-name, Patrick Ervin is now present. The typescript is fifteen pages in length and there are approximately 50 pencilled corrections throughout the manuscript. Although the story did not sell during Howard's lifetime, it did finally appear in the Spring, 1971 issue of THE HOWARD COLLECTOR and in the 1974 FAX Publication hardbound, THE INCREDIBLE ADVENTURES OF DENNIS DORGAN. Original REH manuscript material is rare — and a complete one not missing pages is extremely rare — and that is not a term I flippantly use — they seldom come on the open market but are more often passed from private collector to private collector. The typescript is fifteen pages, approximately 5000 words, in length, housed in a sturdy cloth traycase with an inner chemise; each page in a mylar sleeve. Very good + condition. Store Description

Who am I and Why buy from me? How many times have you ordered a book on eBay only to return it because it wasn't a first edition or in the condition stated? I'm Terence McVicker. I began collecting Fantasy & Science fiction in 1970 and opened my own brick & mortar shoppe in 1976 under the name, The Book Symposium, in Anaheim, California. I closed the shoppe long ago and since have been selling under my own name and on eBay under the moniker of epagana. I mentored for fifteen years under the noted bookman Roy A. Squires, specializing in Fantasy & Science Fiction and in my more than forty years of collecting & selling I have dealt with virtually every major bookseller in the field from Gerry de la Ree to Lloyd Currey. . . and I have learned much! I have sold to and appraised collections for the John Hay Library, Brown University's H.P. Lovecraft Collection and the Bancroft Library, University of Southern California, Berkeley's Clark Ashton Smith Collection and numerous individual clients. I worked with Ray Bradbury & Gary Gianni on Ray's last book - The Nefertiti-Tut Express which I designed and published in 2012 as The RAS PRESS. I have a forty year plus, reputation in the field for integrity, expertise and professionalism that I take great pride in: In other words, everything I sell I know to be authentic and I stake my reputation upon it. And everything sold is guaranteed to be delivered to you in the condition stated or your money back. If your shipment is damaged, then I haven't done my job! It's not the fault of the post office. And I guarantee this worldwide! Let eBay sellers better that! I look forward to having you as my client! - Terence McVicker
