Nel volgere di qualche decennio, a lei e al suo culto l'intera societ� urbana consegna i simboli del suo destino, che cronisti, viaggiatori, artisti e agiografi cominciano a diffondere in tutta Europa. Ma il culto di santa Rosalia non nasce nel Seicento. Era gi� da tempo praticato da persone povere, emarginate, spesso immigrate. Nell'estate del 1624, questo culto periferico si impone come risposta istituzionale alle lacerazioni sociali prodotte dai lutti e dalle angosce della crisi epidemica. In quest'epoca si unificano in uno stesso culto due riti: il pellegrinaggio al Monte Pellegrino e il Festino in citt�, secondo un dispositivo simbolico destinato a scandire il tempo del mito e della storia di Palermo. Questo libro, pubblicato nel 1988, � stato la prima indagine scientifica sugli aspetti monumentali e popolari del culto di santa Rosalia; � oggi un classico di cui non si pu� fare a meno per conoscere la storia antropologica di Palermo.
