Description:

Probable first edition (no direct statement provided). 1-8, [4], 9-362, 1-51, [1], i-viii pages. Hardcover: H 19cm x L 13.25cm. Light green cloth soiled and rubbed with some staining, board corners worn, spine ends frayed with chipping at ends, 11cm tear to cloth descending from head of rear joint leaving some separation between surface cloth and underlying paper backstrip, rubbing to spine lettering with title still legible but with publisher's imprint at heel difficult to discern, front board's lettering still strong but with center state seal vignette quite dulled. Toning and soiling to edges; ink and pencil writing and doodling on front endpapers and front flyleaf recto; crayon, pencil, and ink drawing and writing on rear endpapers; occasional pencil marks as well as some soiling and foxing to interior pages as well. Binding has a few slight stress points but overall still firm. Only a good copy. Scarce Mississippi purple ink oval bookseller stamp on front pastedown: "From | The Corner Drug Store, | J.J. Gill, Prop. | Drugs, Stationery, School & | College Text Books, | Starkville, Miss." With frontispiece b/w image of State Capitol building, two page color Mississippi map presented on two unpaged leaves between pages 8-9, b/w illustrations and photographs, Appendix, 1890 Mississippi Constitution in separately paged 51 page section, and Index. Features a chronological review of state history written at a middle school grade level by an Ole Miss professor well known for his contributions to and editorship of the Publications of the Mississippi Historical Society. Riley examines Mississippi history with greater inclusiveness of fact and less editorial commentary than what is often presented in earlier and later state-sponsored school textbooks (for instance, compare to a middle-school history reader OUR STATE; A GEOGRAPHICAL READER OF MISSISSIPPI by Willa Bolton also published by B.F. Johnson in 1925). Riley is, of course, not without faults for his breadth is quite narrow regarding slavery and African Americans. However, this remains an interesting book in the perspective that it provides a record of what was being taught to young nascent minds in Mississippi's rigidly segregated public education system of the early 1900s. At least two later editions of this book were issued in 1905 and 1915. Description copyright David Hallinan, Bookseller. Bookseller Inventory #
