SCRATCH - Rare Pristine Copy of The Limited Edition: Signed by Christian Boltanski
1st Printing. Signed. 10 pages. Published in 2002. Artist Book. One of the greatest Artist Books of our time. Limited Edition of 200 signed copies. Precedes and should not be confused with the regular trade edition. The Limited Edition is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Christian Boltanski: Regular-sized volume format. Metallic-silver hard boards with titles in front and back, as issued. Photographs selected and re-created by Christian Boltanski. Each page has a silver layer of coating that needs to be scratched off in order to uncover the image hidden underneath. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper and Pergamin translucent paper overlay with spider-web design in Cologne, Germany to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Christian Boltanski's "Scratch". Ten images that were originally presented in a site-specific installation in Cologne, Germany. As a concept and as realized, "Scratch" is one of Christian Boltanski's most original creations. Peeling away a surface to reveal what is hidden underneath is easy compared to scratching it off. It is as if Boltanski were saying that we cannot really know the past unless we are prepared to dig deeper, and expend the effort to do so. Boltanski began his career as a painter of huge canvases and then abandoned the latter to pursue less conventional ways of creating art out of the debris of history and daily life objects. Still, Boltanski is not a photographer; he gave up paint, but never really gave up painting. He is an artist who uses photography as the medium for painting (in exactly the same way that Warhol appropriated photography, with very different aims in mind and using the silkscreen process at hand). No one thinks of Warhol as a photographer because he isn't; neither is Boltanski. The emphasis Boltanski places on the most fragile objects (which a photograph as well as a very cheaply produced Artist Book is) to evoke our "struggle against death" (his phrase) is the central idea behind his sublime art. An absolute "must-have" title for Christian Boltanski collectors. This copy is one of the Limited Edition, and it is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the Back Cover by Christian Boltanski. This title is a contemporary Artist Book classic. This is one of very few copies of the Limited Edition still available online, is still in the publisher's original shrinkwrap, and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 10 plates. One of the greatest artists of our time. A flawless collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER CHRISTIAN BOLTANSKI TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 3883755907. Bookseller Inventory # 10643
