Description:

Collates as [fp], [ffep], [ffly], [ffly], [title leaf], v, [vi], vii, [viii], 9-48, [rfly], [rfep], [rp]. Hardcover: H 15.75cm x L 10.25cm. Original brown cloth, gilt stamping to spine but with frayed ends chipped and patches of surface loss lengthwise; board edges worn; with patches of surface cloth loss to boards particularly to stained rear board. Strong toning to front free endpaper which has antiquarian ink inscription with some associated ink smudging onto opposing front pastedown; foxing prevalent throughout with some faint moisture staining at fore-edge margins; chips to top corners of pages 29-32; rear free endpaper appears to be adhered to rear pastedown as evidenced by some slight separation at edges; aforementioned rear board's staining carries through to ffep; three pencil inscriptions on rear blanks of which two are dated for 1859 and 1868. Binding is still firm. B/w title page vignette. Prefatory Note on page vii by "The Editor" with byline "Nashville, Tenn., May 9, 1855." Two chapters titled as: "The Sea in Summer and Winter-Formation of Waves-The Tides" and "Saltness of the Sea-Its Colors-Its Transparency-It Luminousness-Its Depth." Evidently a rare antebellum Nashville, Tennessee imprint for this 1855 Stevenson-Owen-M.E. Church, South imprint is unrecorded by OCLC although there is a citation for an 1860 M.E. Church, South imprint with a single copy (albeit flawed by lacking last text leaf) held by Southern Connecticut State University. Thomas O. Summers was editor of the weekly newspaper Nashville Christian Advocate. Sold as is. Bookseller Inventory #
