About this title

The legend of El Dorado, and of a naked ruler who covered his body in gold dust, completely obsessed conquistadors and successive adventurers, who went in search of the sacred gold belonging to the Indians in Central and South America. Here is not only the story of the explorers' cruelty, but also of the indescribable hardships they suffered. Beguilingly illustrated with images from the Gold Museum in Bogotá, as well as the author's own photographs.

About the Author:

John Hemming has long been interested in the conquest period of South America. He has experienced expeditions cutting into unexplored Amazon forest, and has visited many American Indian tribes, notably on the upper Amazon, on the hills of the Brazilian-Venezuelan frontier, in the interior of the Guianas, and along the length of the Andes. He is a former Director and Secretary of the Royal Geographical Society.
