Manuscript note, in ink, on verso signed by Capt. W.T. James of the 57th Virginia Infantry, to his wife: ‘Sept. 24, ’61. My dear Jennie, I send you a map of the seat of war by Mr. Dennis P. Stanley which may be of some interest to you and our Pa. This leaves me in good health. I am getting fat and fine again and I hope this will find you well of the measles. I hope it will find all well at your Pa’s and in the neighborhood. I also trust it will find father’s family all well and the neighborhood generally. I will write you again soon, my precious wife. W.T. James. P.S. Melvin is well and as fat as a bear. He sends his love to his mamma. Scratch out the writing on this before you show it to any strangers. W.T. James.’ CRANDALL 3063.
