Nathanson (1810-1875) was the son and son-in-law of wealthy and well-respected scholars. He was supported all his life by both his first and second wives and their families, so that he could focus on scholarship. In 1857 he was appointed rabbi of Lemberg, and due to his second wife's great wealth, declined the position's salary. As a responsa writer, Nathanson answered questions from the world over, and maintained a high volume of correspondence. Though never a progressive, he tended to be practical and a little lenient in his interpretations of halakhic rules, realizing that modern times produced new and unique problems and circumstances. (EJ, 2007) Binding repaired, spine rather worn, otherwise good condition. (RAB-27-13). Bookseller Inventory #
