Book Description New Directions [Printed by The Golden Eagle Press], Norfolk, Connecticut, 1941. Soft cover. Book Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Book Condition: Very good. New Directions Poet of the Month #6 (1941). The text block is in very good condition, with no marks, tears, or dog-ears. Original owner's bookplate affixed to the half-title page; it has caused puckering of first few pages. Gray paper cover is sun faded along spine. 9¿ x 6¿, 25 pages, 3 ounces. [Info from inner flap]: When, about a year ago, John Wheelwright was struck by a speeding car, Boston lost one of its most colorful characters and American poetry one of its most original and provocative talents. Like so many artists who have pioneered fresh techniques, Wheelwright received little popular recognition in his lifetime, though he published three volumes of verse. But his work caught the eye of perspicacious critics who marked him as a man to watch, one likely to achieve permanence. A complete edition of Wheelwright's poetry is in preparation but it will not be ready for a year or more. In the meanwhile, we thought it well to signalize his achievement and keep his memory green with a brief selection ¿ a recapitulation ¿ of his finest work in the shorter verse forms, As editor, we called on Wheelwright's friend R. P. Blackmur, the critic, who has contributed a valuable preface, defining, in some measure, the poet's particular gifts. Wheelwright is, of course, a minor poet. And he is often difficult because he believed that complex modern subjects demanded complex verbal expression. But he will reward the careful reader with exciting, totally original poetic insights, [From Wikipedia]: John Brooks Wheelwright (sometimes Wheelright) (9 September 1897 ¿ 13 September 1940) was an American poet from a Boston Brahmin background. He belonged to the poetic avant garde of the 1930s and was a Marxist, a founder-member of the Trotskyist Socialist Workers Party in the United States. He was bisexual. He died after being struck by an automobile at the intersection of Beacon St. and Massachusetts Avenue in the early morning hours of September 13, 1940. Wheelwright was descended from the 17th-century clergyman John Wheelwright on his father's side and the 18th-century Massachusetts governor John Brooks on his mother's side. He studied at Harvard University and at Massachusetts Institute of Technology before practicing as an architect in Boston. He was editor of the magazine Poetry for a Dime.
