About this title

THE SEVEN AGES OF CHILDHOOD was first published in Collier's Magazine in 1908. It was run serially, one picture and poem per issue. In it, Jessie Willcox Smith and Carolyn Wells captured a dream of ideal childhood. The progression of images shows children at seven stages from infancy to adulthood. In Collier's the pictures were reproduced in black and white. In 1909, all of the poems and pictures were published together in a book now with all of the pictures reproduced in full color. It is this edition that has been reproduced here.
