Book Description Chicago: General Defense Committee, [1932], 1932. First edition. Stapled, illustrated wrappers (5 " x 8 "), 27 pp., four photographs. Some browning to wrappers, but a surprisingly well-preserved copy. Scarce in commerce, with no other copies currently available (July, 2019). Less than two dozen copies in OCLC. A sympathetic account of the "struggle of the Harlan miners against the oppression of King Coal" culminating in the Battle of Evarts, which led to the death of three deputies and one miner. Costello describes the legal proceedings that followed, the extreme prejudice meted out to the "loyal colored miners," and concludes with a support appeal for funds, and food and clothing for the starving families of Harlan. Besides being active in the General Defense Committee, Costello was director of the Federated Press (a labor news service). The pamphlet was reprinted in 1972 by the Appalachian Movement Press.
