About this Item

Wright, Harold Bell: THE SHEPHERD OF THE HILLS. New York: Grosset & Dunlap, later issue [1951] from 1907 plates. A bit of stack-slant otherwise Fine hardcover in Fine dust jacket. This specific edition seemingly inscribed "to Old Matt's Cabin" etc., "Harold Bell Wright," is occasionally offered as Wright's most frequently autographed book. Since the edition is dated only in code, the mistake might be honestly made. Well after Wright's death it was sold to tourists at the Shepherd of the Hills Farm in the Missouri Ozarks. Having been sold at what passed for the location of the tale does add a little oomph to such copies, but the signature is a posthumous facsimile. The tale is one of Wright's most famous about a city slicker who discovers the peaceful beauty Ozark country life. It was adapted to the screen multiple times, in the silent era in 1919 and 1928, then most famously in 1941 starring John Wayne, remade in 1964 for television. Bookseller Inventory # 1745
