In this entry in the long running series of films, it was wartime, and so the theme reflected that. Holmes and Watson travel from London to Washington, D.C. after a British diplomat carrying secret government documents is kidnapped by the Nazis, though not before he is able to slip microfilm of the documents inside a matchbox into the purse of a woman on the plane. The woman is abducted and Holmes is on the quest to recover those documents. The woman (Marjorie Lord as Nancy Partridge) who has the microfilm in a matchbox in her purse has been kidnapped and rolled up in a carpet. Holmes (Rathbone) and Watson (Bruce) are to her rescue.
