About this Item

Probable first edition. 12mo. (19cm.) [9]2-189p. Folding frontispiece Plan of Pevensey Castle plus five full-page plates and four illustrations in the text. Red cloth with gilt letters on the front cover and spine and a gilt vignette on the front cover. Previous owner's name: R.E. Elphinstine. Pevensey is a village in East Sussex, England. Robert Sutton [1832-1910] was Prebendary of Chichester, Pevensey Vicarage, Hastings; Rector of Pevensey and Archdeacon of Lewes. Among other things, his A SHORT ACCOUNT OF PEVENSEY recalls the life of Major Vidler, who moved to Pevensey in 1841 to become "Expenditor to the Commissioners of Pevensey Levels." "The Pevensey Levels are an area of reclaimed coastal wetland lying between Eastbourne and Beshill-on-Sea and it was the duty of the Expenditor to make sure that funds were spent on the repair and maintenance of banks and drainage ditches to prevent flooding. By 1851, Major Vidler had been appointed to the post of Surveyor of the Levels and his son Albert, recorded as a 22 year old 'Surveyor' in the 1851 Census, was probably working as an assistant to his father. In his book 'Pevensey and Its Neighbourhood' (1897), Robert Sutton junior recalled the life of Albert Vidler and remarked that 'he and his father before him were the officers appointed by the Commissioners of Levels to supervise the drainage of the marshes and prevent the inroads of the sea.'" Very minor wear to extremities, spine faded and gilt dulled, all illustrations present and near fine, rear hinge starting, front hinge intact, cloth clean and cover gilt bright, else very good or better. No dust jacket. Bookseller Inventory # 04498
