About this Item

HC in boards. Lovecraft's stillborn first book was printed in 1928 by W. Paul Cook at The Recluse Press, but could not really be considered "published" until 1961, when August Derleth bound the final 100 sets of sheets at Arkham House. In the mid-sixties some forgeries began to appear on the market. While the Arkham copies are bound in black cloth, this copy is bound in red cloth with a red leather spine lettered in gold (possibly to emulate the specially bound copy that Robert Barlow presented to Lovecraft in 1935?) A copy of the Arkham House cancel is pasted to the verso of the title page, but the W. Paul Cook copyright statement is not printed underneath. The text is obviously offset-printed instead of the letter press printing of the genuine Recluse Press sheets. The total number of forged copies is unknown, but these seem at least as scarce or more so than the legitimate copies. Front edpage has split along the seam exposing the inner hinge when the cover is opened all the way. Previous owner's plate on the front free pastedown. A very good or better copy.
