1st Printing. Signed. 191 pages. Published in 1999. Landmark retrospective collection of photographs. One of Victor Skrebneski's finest achievements. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. A brilliant production by Victor Skrebneski and Editions Stemmle: Oversize-volume format. Black hard boards with white titles embossed on cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Victor Skrebneski. Essays by Denise Miller and Robert Sobieszek. The essays are the best ever written on Skrebneski. List of Plates and Biography appended at the end. Printed on glossy stock paper in Switzerland to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ with black titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Published on the occasion of Skrebneski Studio Chicago's 50th Year Anniversary celebration in 1999. Presents, in one handsome volume, Skrebneski's achievement as an artist/photographer. Here is a glittering array of photographs, spanning - and celebrating - the second half of the century (1949-1999). Skrebneski's career took off at the very same time that America's did: This was the period when his beloved city, Chicago, became a world-class city, and just as important to Skrebneski personally, his adopted country became the undisputed superpower of the world. His story is THE story of the last fifty years of the 20th century: After many years of painful struggle as a Polish exile, Skrebneski fled Europe, sought and found refuge in the United States, where he lives to this day. Here are his dramatically lit celebrity portraits; iconic fashion tableaux-photographs; provocative and Surrealist experimental compositions; sensual, full-frontal male and female nudes as well as previously unseen images from his private collection. While he is celebrated for his masterly, Classical use of light and shadow, his images, not just his nudes, are erotic, brimming with Modernist playfulness, sensuality, and vitality in a way that contemporary art photography consciously avoids (because it cannot be faked, you are either a sexual being or not) and is therefore its self-inflicted loss. Skrebneski turned 85 in 2014 and published a memento of his long life and nearly just-as-long, 65-year-old career, "Ageing". In it, he shows photographs of himself through the years with some of the Beautiful People he photographed, an intimate journal of priceless "selfies", if you will. "The art of Victor Skrebneski is sublime, provocative, and completely beautiful" (Hubert de Givenchy). An absolute "must-have" title for Skrebneski collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed in metallic-silver pen-marker on his self-portrait, the book's very last image, shown at the back, by Skrebneski. His signature glows against the light. This title is a modern photography classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine copy. A rare signed copy thus. 130 duotone, 19 color plates. One of the greatest artist/photographers of our time. A fine collectible copy.
