About this Item

Raphaelson, Samson (1894-1983). SKYLARK. New York: Random House, 1939. First Edition. A Fine copy in a Very Good priced dustjacket (DJ browned and chipped at extremities but it bears the Agency stamp of Leah Salisbury "Exclusive Agent For The Play" on the front panel of the jacket as well as the front-free endpaper and the dedication page). Inscribed by Raphaelson: "For Dramatists Guild from Samson Raphaelson" suggesting that this volume may at one time have been either the Agency's or the Dramatist Guild's or perhaps even Sam Raphaelson's file copy. Raphaelson directed the stage play with Gertrude Lawrence. The 1941 film version of SKYLARK, a classic "love triangle" romantic comedy starred Ray Milland and Claudette Colbert. Raphaelson himself was a famous screenwriter, having worked on a dozen films including some major hits like THE SHOP AROUND THE CORNER, HEAVEN CAN WAIT, and Hitchcock's SUSPICION. His play THE JAZZ SINGER was the film source for that historically crucial first synchronized sound "talkie" with music. Bookseller Inventory # 001080
