Book Description Jarrolds, London, 1927. Hard Cover. Condition: Good. First Edition. The author's very SCARCE first book. First published in the UK by Jarrolds in September 1925 (first impression), the second impression of the first edition appeared in January 1926, this copy is the THIRD IMPRESSION of the first edition, which appeared in March 1927. The title was first published in the US by Doubleday in 1926. Scarce in any edition. Contains a collection of 18 short stories, including the classic horror tale The Smoking Leg (which is the first short story in the book). "John Metcalfe (1891-1965) was a teacher, short story writer and novelist. After publication of The Smoking Leg & Other Stories he abandoned teaching to begin writing full time." Printed in Great Britain by Richard Clay & Sons. Bound in publisher's original green boards with black lettering to front board & spine, black border to front board. NO dustjacket. NOTE: A GOOD COPY ONLY. Front board with large stain (affecting approximately 1/3 of the cover), spine uniformly faded (though lettering is bold & unfaded), front hinge gently cracked (though holding tight), light spotting to edge of book block & mild foxing internally, small bump to spine guttering, general handling wear & shelfwear, rough erasure of former owner's ink name to both front pastedown & ffep, appears to lack a leaf between title page & contents page, otherwise despite the faults still a clean tight solid hardcover copy. 348pp. Early impression of a scarce title. RARE. Size: 19 x 12.5cm. Seller Inventory # 005973
