About this Item

First edition of one of the hardest books to find in the Rackham oeuvre, A PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED by the author to a family member and also signed by the Rhymster, Witter Bynner. With three colour plates and ten black and white plates all by Arthur Rackham. Small 4to, in the publisher's original light blue cloth with pictorial stamping by Arthur Rackham on the front cover in black, spine lettered in black. 78pp. A very bright and uncommonly clean copy of this scarce book, the cloth a bit mellowed at the spine, otherwise all quite fine. ONE OF THE RAREST OF THE BOOKS ILLUSTRATED BY ARTHUR RACKHAM, this a unique copy inscribed by the author to her nephew in the year of publication and also signed by the author the rhymes found within the story. This work is a play based on the story of the Selfish Giant by Oscar Wilde, but is not a dramatization of that story. The character of Snickerty Nick is original to this work, and the play centers around him. The little boy is only a loving and beloved child, and Spring and Winter are personified by faeries and gnomes. Ms. Ford says in her introduction; "To Arthur Rackham I tender my most sincere thanks whose magic touch, as in Peter Pan, Grimm's Faery Tales and Undine, making real all faeries and gnomes, endears all child life to grown-ups as well as to children.".
