About this Item

1887, square 12mo, vi, [6]-154pp. Light wear, gilt lettering still bright, about G+. Bevan was an obscure poet who was born in England in 1811. He was apprenticed in the carpentry trade at the age of seventeen. Deciding that he did not like the work, he sailed to America in 1834, where he stayed for two years. In 1836, he returned to England and married the daughter of the man to whom he had been apprenticed. In 1843, he brought his family back to America, settling first in Iowa where he engaged in farming and was also a minister in a newly organized church. After the death of his wife, he devoted his life to the ministry, entering Lane Theological Seminary in Cincinnati. Upon graduation, he settled in Indiana where he spent the rest of his life engaged in the Presbyterian ministry. He died in 1890. He left only four known publications. The first part of this book includes poems of the Civil War, dedicated to the memory of his son, Edward B. Bevan, who died while a member of the Thirty-eighth Indiana Volunteers. Coincidentally, my great-grandfather also served in that regiment. DELPHON; THE MYSTIC ISLE comprises the second part of the book. See Banta, INDIANA AUTHORS AND THEIR BOOKS, wherein the author's name is misspelled Bevin. Bookseller Inventory # 07410
