First edition. Atherton took up writing when her husband -- the man who had come to woo her mother but with whom she eloped instead -- died at sea, leaving her with a young daughter to support. When she revealed she was the author of her first, pseudonymous, serialized book, she was ostracized by her family but continued writing novels, 56 in all. She also wrote a weekly column, "A Woman in Her Variety" for the San Francisco Examiner, where she met Ambrose Bierce, with whom, according to her autogiographical ADVENTURES OF A NOVELIST, she had a stormy relationship. Bright and fine in very good dust jacket with creased, closed tear to front panel repaired with tape on verso (else would be near fine). Bookseller Inventory #
