1st Printing. Signed. 240 pages. Published in 2007. The photographer's "South" Trilogy presented, as they should be by now, as a Complete Set. One of the most important photographic projects of our time. A trilogy whose titles were taken by Mark Steinmetz from each respective area's telephone directory, the books were published between 2007 and 2009 by Nazraeli Press as three individual Limited Edition volumes: "South Central" (2007), "South East" (2008), and "Greater Atlanta" (2009). Each of the titles is the First Limited Edition and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. "South Central" consists of 72 pages with 57 duotone plates; "South East", 72 pages with 57 duotone plates; and "Greater Atlanta", 88 pages with 73 duotone plates. All three volumes, particularly "South Central", are now rare. They are presented here as a Complete Set in an elegant, handmade green-and-white cloth slipcase that will protect and keep them together for posterity. In pristine glassine DJ's, as issued. "The artist possesses an uncanny ability to pull folly, aggression, and tenderness through his lens simultaneously, and delivers a powerful and touching visual novel of the human condition" (Publisher's blurb on "South Central"). "Renowned for producing powerful pictures that capture the strong sense of displacement and isolation felt by many young Americans" (on "South East"). "Provides his testimony on contemporary American civilization. Combining portraits and landscapes, he weaves a symbolic and lyrical investigation that subtly questions notions of Progress. He further develops motifs - on the automobile, on the telephone - and catalogues car culture, fast food, convenience stores, and suburban sprawl" (on "Greater Atlanta"). Despite their "place" titles, the passage of time itself is Steinmetz's true subject, the inherent (and necessary) one for every landscape or street photographer, who must turn time into place. An absolute "must-have" set Mark Steinmetz and "South" Trilogy collectors. These copies of "South Central", South East", and "Greater Atlanta" are very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Mark Steinmetz. Each book is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. These titles are contemporary photography classics. As far as we know, this is the only such Signed And Slipcased Complete Set available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, pristine beauties. The slipcase is handcrafted to keep the set together for posterity. Please note: Copies of each volume available online command hundreds of dollars even though many of them have major flaws. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed set thus. Mark Steinmetz's "South" Trilogy is now widely regarded as one of the most valuable photographic projects of our time. One of the most brilliant photographers of our time. A fine collectible set. (SEE ALSO OTHER MARK STEINMETZ TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 1590051718. Bookseller Inventory #

From the publisher: "Renowned for his modest yet powerful photographs that capture the sense of displacement and isolation felt by many young Americans, Mark Steinmetz photographed in and around Knoxville, Tennessee to create the work that makes up South Central. The title of the book is derived from the South Central Bell telephone company that serves Knoxville, and their public payphones are a recurring theme in this work; an iconic reminder of the area's socio-economic condition. The artist possesses an uncanny ability to pull folly, aggression and tenderness through his lens simultaneously, and delivers with this book a powerful and touching visual novel of the human condition. Mark Steinmetz is a Guggenheim Fellow. His work is included in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art."
