Description:

Poor condition. H 12.75cm x L 8cm. Missing front and rear covers and all initial leaves inclusive to page xiv (including title leaf). First leaf present is pages xv-xvi but detached, toned, and torn with chipped corners and associated text loss. Pages xvii-xviii also toned with chipped corners and small text loss. Other early leaves with worn corners and toning. Thus collates as xiv-xxiv, 1-705. Probably missing a rear flyleaf or two and rear free endpaper. Original spine leather worn and scuffed with two gilt stamped horizontal bars still evident but lacking title label and with .75cm loss at head and jagged chipping at heel with deepest loss at 1.75cm. Toning to edges with small dark brown stain to fore-edge. Light to mild foxing to interior leaves with some creasing and wear to corners. Interior leaves remain reasonably well bound. Although lacking title leaf, this copy should be the 1859 Nashville edition published by South-Western Publishing House as its overall collation matches the 1859 editions listed by OCLC. There was also an 1871 edition of THE SOUTHERN PSALMIST but its collates as xxx, 706 (per University of Tennessee online library catalog citation) thus eliminating that edition as a possibility. Also included is a title leaf (presumably pages 1-2) and pages 3-4 of "Supplement to the Arkansas Edition of the Southern Psalmist" by W.M. Lea and P.S.G. Watson, Memphis, South-Western Publishing House undated but should be 1861. Sold as is with all faults. Scarce antebellum southern hymn book with 1020 song lyrics (no musical scores) plus a concluding section of nineteen doxologies. Bookseller Inventory #
