About this Item

Oblong 4to. (12 x 9"0 unpaged [20P.] Profusely illustrated with black and white captioned photos including all the political and military notables, as well as several of Col. Schilling. Stapled booklet in photo pictorial wrappers. Just hints of wear to extremities, wrappers clean and bright, corners square and flat, no rust on the staples, else near fine to fine with no internal markings. "Colonel David Carl Schilling [1918-1956] was a fighter pilot, dedicated to his country and the Air Force.[who] probably left a greater mark upon it than any other one man. He was a colonel at 24, an ace with 24 kills against the German Luftwaffe. More than any other American officer he was responsible for the development of aerial refueling techniques for fighter aircraft. He led the first jet fighter flights over both the Atlantic and Pacific. He made the first non-stop jet flight from England to America. For this he received the Harmon Trophy given each year to the nation's outstanding aviator. He led the fist non-stop fighter plane flight to North Africa. He spent the final five years of his brilliant career as a member of the Strategic Air Command." [from the front matter in the booklet] This is an extraordinary piece of aviation, Schilling, and/or Salina, Kansas ephemera. Bookseller Inventory # 007960
