About this Item

Nagasaki 1927 first edition thus Hibiki Shashinkan (Photo Studio). Large luscious photograph album of Nagasaki (album measures 9x12 inches ; 24x31 cm.) Text is dated 1926 but initial section (of 7 pages) appears to be a souvenir of a specific event in 1927 which was then bound onto the photograph album. Album is Hardcover covered with tan velvet with side flaps. Front board panel has image of a schooner in gilt on a leather rectangle mounted in the middle. Silver lettering. Rear panel has embossed name "Hibiki". The 1927 souvenir begins with a page with a mounted original photograph of an unidentified group of Japanese and 4 Westerners. Appears to have been a group interested in botany, possibly gardening, as names of several plants, Agro-Hort Society and the name Robert Fortune appear in the Japanese text which follows. The photo is followed by a titlepage "A Sentimental Night in Japan Apr 1927" in English and Japanese and then 5 pages of text in Japanese printed on rectos only. Then follows 114 page Souvenir of Nagasake - the first page is a color painting, then 113 pages of Hibiki's very beautiful artistic photographs of Nagasaki , some foldout, several tipped in, all with tissue guards. All photos identified in English and in Japanese. Text and Photos are Fine. Cover is VG with no tearing but some fading and rubbing on velvet and one 1/4 inch chip in velvet on middle of rear panel. All hinges secure and uncracked. No ownership marks. Rare. (One copy in the British Museum which apparently has a different introductory souvenir bound in.). Bookseller Inventory # a87376
