Book Description Mobile [AL] and New York: S.H. Goetzel and Company, 1857., 1857. COMPLETE TWO VOLUME SET in original brown cloth bindings. Both first editions (per 1857 dates upon title and copyright pages). Hardcover: H 19cm x L 12.5cm. Staining to board cloth; board corners worn; fraying at spine ends. Volume I has 2cm chip near spine head causing loss of title lettering; some cloth loss lengthwise along front board's fore-edge with strip curling back exposing underlying cardstock; rear board's fore-edge cloth just peeled back with some fraying but relatively intact; partial antiquarian ownership label still affixed near top of front board. Volume II has slender loss to cardstock and cloth lower 7cm of front board; similar amount of cloth at lower rear board peeling backward exposing cardstock; past owner's (G.J.S. Cavallero) label intact near top of front board. Light blue endpapers to each volume but with chipping/tearing at fore-edge margins of both front free endpapers. Vol. I. ffep with pencil signature of "Mrs. Jno. Cowley" plus front fly ink inscription "G.J.S. Cavallero | Sept. 18th. 1857" plus pencil doodle on rfep recto; multiple partial and full quires pulled. Vol. II ffep ink inscription "'Literary Club of the Y.M.C.A. | G.J.S. Cavallero" followed by front fly ink inscription "G.J.S. Cavallero | Sept. 18th. 1857" plus chip at lower fore-edge margin of pages 291-292 causing fractional text loss; quite containing pages 75-94 detached and now laid-in. Foxing and some toning to interior leaves throughout both volumes. Only a fair set at best but a still quite uncommon Mobile imprint of a noted autobiography. VOLUME I: xvi, 348 pages. Includes the often missing errata slip present bound-in at top between pages x-xi. VOLUME II: viii, 348 pages. Born in Augusta, Georgia and a longtime resident of Mobile, Alabama beginning in 1835, Madame Octavia Walton Le Vert (1811-1877), nee Octavia Celestia Valentine Walton, was a prominent wealthy socialite who is now best remembered for this two volume set relaying her European experiences during trips in 1853 and 1855. {Bibliographical reference: Smith "American Travellers Abroad" L32 and Sabin 40750.} Although S.H. Goetzel and Company's Mobile, Alabama imprint is primary (with the company's New York address being secondary) at the foot of the title page, Cathleen A. Baker, author of "The Enterprising S. H. Goetzel: Antebellum and Civil War Publisher in Mobile, Alabama" notes that New York city book and job printer John F. Trow performed (or arranged for) the printing and binding of La Vert's two-volume work. Trow's imprint is present on both volumes' copyright pages as "John F. Trow | Book and Job Brinter [sic] | 379 B'dway, N.Y." The first edition of five thousand copies was shipped to Mobile in mid-September 1857 and the Mobile Daily Register published an enthusiastic review on September 23, 1857 which certainly places Mobile resident Cavallero's handwritten date as a solid indicator of when the set was available in the city's bookstores.
