About this Item

First Edition. Head and heel of spine has slight fraying, in all other respects Very Good. Four full color plates by John Norval Marchand (1875-1921). Author introduction speaks a little of his other works as well. Set in the mid-1800s, the first half of this novel is one of Brady's sea adventure fantasies of Edenic primitive reversion of island castaways, the same primitivism that inspired Edgar Rice Burroughs' Tarzan adventures, it having been a then-current belief that if civilized (white) man were tested by primitive conditions, his inate superiority would be honed and improved. For overlap in theme, this book appears on numerous ERB-related bibliographies. Upon the return to civilization, the story develops into an American Civil War adventure. The first half of this novel was filmed in the silent era as "Heart's Adrift" (1914) starring Mary Pickford and Harold Lockwood. The film was a runaway success and big leap in Pickford's career. But it is believed lost now, with only stills and ads for it surviving. Bookseller Inventory # 3147
