About this Item

Paper Covers. Binding and contents are almost like new. ; Small paper-cover ed book, 4-3/4" x 6-7/8", 30 sepia-tone picture postcards plus title page & a two-page introduction. The book is printed on heavy, high-gloss paper, and the postcards could actually be removed and mailed - the photos are printed on one side, with the other side containing information on the photo and space for the address and postage. The photos are from "The Byron Collection, Museum of the City of New York. " Joseph Byron arrived in New York from England in 1888 and embarked on what would be a twenty-five year career in stage photography. At first he had to talk his way past reluctant producers but when his photos were printed in the papers, giving the theaters free publicity, the theater people soon realized the value of his photography, and gave him ready backstage access. In the end, they were paying him to photograph their plays and their stars. The photos in this collection are of stars, both posed and informal, theaters, theater patrons, and stage action, all beautifully reproduced on the smooth, glossy, extra white paper which brings out every little detail and nuance. About this title

In 1892, English photographer Joseph Byron got his foot in the stage door at a few New York theaters. In short order he had created the field of stage photography, as theatrical producers noted the publicity value of Byronís pictures. Byron and his family went on to document New York culture in general for forty years, but the theater photographs remain among their most intriguing work. This book of postcards presents thirty evocative duotone images of vintage New York actors, theaters, and productions.
