About this Item

First edition, AN EXCELLENT ASSOCIATION COPY WARMLY INSCRIBED BY ROBERT FROST, SIGNED AND DATED 1947. 8vo, publisherís original green cloth lettered in gilt on the spine. In the original dustjacket. 63, notes pp. A fine copy with only a touch of very minor mellowing to the spine tips. The jacket with some edge wear and the jacket spine panel toned and with some loss at the head and foot. FIRST EDITION AND A SCARCE SIGNED ASSOCIATION COPY, warmly inscribed by Frost to Virginia Proctor, secretary to Harvard President James Byrant Conant. Though Frost's tenure at Harvard was short, his friendship with Mrs. Proctor lasted well beyond his years in Cambridge. It was President Conant who first cited Frost as "The Poet of New England" when Frost was given an honorary degree of Litt.D. in 1937. In 1938 Frost resigned from Amherst and was elected to Harvard's Board of Overseers and that year also saw him placed in the English department at the university. Conant reappointed Frost for the years 1939 through 1942. Though Frost's formal ties with Harvard would end in that year, his association with Virginia Proctor would continue for many years following. The inscription on this 1947 publication reads, "To Virginia Proctor / From her old friend / Robert Frost / August 25 1947" STEEPLE BUSH Includes over forty poems. The poems in this volume carry on the early and characteristic lyric note, which has never been clearer and surer. The people and places of New England are here too, and the earthy, warm, and hearty humor of this highly individual specimen of American character - the New Englander - is as evident and as droll as ever. For pure poetry, and for the kind of very American perception which is the woof and web of his art, this volume - which takes its title from new Englandís native plant called Steeple bush - is a distinguished book.".
