About this Item

Original owner's name & date of March 2, 1897, on the front endpaper. Spine dusty, a few soiled spots to the rear cover, slight spine slant, else a solid very good copy with strong hinges. Preceded by the rare African edition published in the Cape Times Christmas number of December 1896, this is a new enlarged, revised edition with appendices & new introduction, illustrated with photos, drawings & maps. Account of The Jameson Raid, which was a raid on Paul Kruger's Transvaal Republic (Orange Free State & The South African Republic) carried out by Leander Starr Jameson with his Rhodesian & Bechuanaland policemen over the New Year weekend of 1895 - 1896. Its purpose was to try to cause an uprising by the primarily British expatriate workers (known as Uitlanders) in the Transvaal but failed to do so. While the raid was ineffective & no uprising took place, it did much to bring about the Second Boer War and the Second Matabele War. Bookseller Inventory # 008196
