American first edition. viii, 291, [4] pages. Hardcover; H 19.25cm x L 13cm. Lacks dust jacket. Dark blue cloth, gilt stamped lettering upon spine and front board remains quite bright, some flaking to silver stamped vignette upon front board and rubbing to multi-colored monster vignette upon spine; fraying at spine ends and at tips of board corners, light rubbing to boards but with mottling occurring to front board and along spine particularly at heel. Slight cock to spine. Edges soiled; some soiling and foxing upon interior leaves. Past owner's name somewhat erased from front pastedown. All unpaged b/w illustrated leaves by Gilbert Gaul present but with illustrated leaf between pages 202-203 detached and now laid-in; binding is otherwise quite firm. Four pages of publisher's advertisements at rear. Else a good+ copy. Author's name is not cited upon the title page but authorship is known to be James De Mille (1833-1880). Bookseller Inventory #
