About this Item

Helsinki: Suomalais-Ugrilainen Seura, 1913-1918, 932 pages, 27 plates in b&w. In the original printed wraps, the only way issued. Note on condition: The original thin paper spine is disintegrating due to the sheer weight of this nearly 100 year old one-thousand page book. The book is internally fine. Thirty-nine papers are presented in German, Finnish and English including: "Some Buddhist Fragments from Chinese Turkestan in Sanskrit and Khotanese" by M. Airila; "Bronzezeitliches in Uralgebirge" by A. M. Tallgren; "Tungusich und Finnisch-Ugrisch" by Heinrich Winkler; "A Samoyede Epic" by K. R. Donner; "Die Chronologie der Turkischen Donaubulgaren" by J. J. Mikkola; "Zwei Uigurische Runeninschriften in der Nord-Mongolei" by G. J. Ramstedt; "Zur Frage nach der Verwandtschaft der Finnisch-Ugrischen und Samojedischen Sprachen" by E. N. Setala and "Om Renslakten och Beredningen af Renhudar hos Frostvikens Lappar" by Nils Keyland. A centennial celebration of Matthias Alexander Castren (1813-1852) with engraved frontis portrait is included in the first two sections. He focused on collecting more than 10 Uralic languages in Siberia and determining Finnish origin. Bookseller Inventory # 017850
