The preface, dated 1890, remarks that Deptford is a "dark and depraved" neighbourhood, and that those assembling at the Congregational Church were in need of Sabbath evening addresses at the Sunday school. "Mr. Isaac Watson, Mr. Fredrick Billing, and Mr. John Davison were requested to conduct the services, each taking their turn every third Sabbath. The attendance was not so large as was anticipated, and the arrangement was not again renewed after the winter season. A city missionary being appointed to the disrict, in preparing for the evening addresses, it was my practice to write them, with a view of aiding my memory. the refreshing influence of research and preparation have never left me. It is sweet, very sweet, after a period of twenty-eight years, to recall the past, and live over again the pleasant associations of the Sabbath Services.". Bookseller Inventory # D11995
