Willis's Sacred Poems with Illustrations by Darley, Herrick, Chapman, Parsons, Whitney, Lumley, Ehninger, White and Hitchcock by Nathaniel Parker Willis (1806-1867). New York: Clark and Maynard, Publishers, 1868. xiv, 126 pages. 4.75 x 6.25 inches, 16 cm. One small ink notation: Jennie, showing on front endpapers otherwise unmarked. Back pastedown shows 2.50 original price in pencil and binder's ticket with surface layer removed. Some scattered foxing. Solid binding. All corners lightly bumped. Cover wear shows most at corners and spine ends, includes fraying and wear to boards. Tissue over frontispiece, title page with vignette, 9 leaves of plates. Edges stained red. Brown pebble grain cloth showing blind stamped border design on beveled boards. Vignette in gold includes cross, lyre, and crown radiating rays with title in decorative border below. Dark green endpapers. Spine ruled with three gold bands at head and tail with title and small floral type flourish in gold. The first edition of Sacred Poems was published in 1935 and went through several printings during Willis' lifetime. This 1868 edition was published after his death on January 20, 1867, Nathaniel's 61st birthday. An 1868 advertisement described the edition offered here as one small quarto volume, handsomely printed on tinted paper and bound in cloth, red or gilt edges. Price 2.50. The majority of the sacred poems are familiar Bible stories from the Old and New Testaments retold in a descriptive manner to create a visual picture of events as Willis imagined them using blank verse.
