About this Item

Hardcover. Octavo. x + 500pp + 4pp ads. Early twentieth century (?) full brown leather binding, raised bands & gilt-lettering on spine. Each of the two parts has its own engraved frontispiece, one additional full page plate and various illustrations in-text. Glanvil wrote 'Saddicismus Triumphatus' as a refutation of works by skeptics such as John Webster, and in it sought to 'put the belief in apparitions and witchcraft on an unshakeable basis of science and philosophy.' The book attracted considerable attention with Kittredge further observing that 'No other English work on the subject had a more powerful influence.' Some chafing along edges & corners of spine & boards, page-edges browned, verso of first frontispiece is discolored & has a small paper-strip repair at top-edge; occasional discoloration (nothing serious) to some pages throughout; else a tight near-VG copy.
