About this title

I rediscovered my father's family in 2011, more than 20 years after losing contact. A string of coincidences and curious shifts of circumstances brought me back to them and in the process I uncovered a clan I am proud to call my family. On rediscovering them, I also heard stories from the Said family's older generation. I learned about the obstacles they faced in an era now long gone as their lives in the mid 1900s endured a series of calamitous twists. Raised in Port Said in the glory days of Egypt, my father and his siblings led privileged, glamourous lives. My great-grandfather, Giovanni, founded the Port Said Water Company to supply water to ships working on the Suez Canal and his family was well-known and respected in their home city. When Nasser nationalized the country in 1950s, they were forced to leave, taking only their personal possessions with them. They crossed the world in ships, most of them putting down roots in Australia where they started families and businesses of their own, experiencing countless harrowing challenges and pitfalls along the way. This personal family history is designed to capture the memories of my father's generation and to recount their experiences for today's generation and generations to come so they will understand the influences that make them what they are today.
