Ambassador to the Mohawks. // . -- XV._ The Happy Night of the Martyrs. // . -- Epilogue: How the Trails Converged . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . , 'Behind the doorpost a warrior stood, with a tomahawk poised ready to strike. The bowed head of Ondessonk came forward around the edge of the skin curtain. Honatteniate leaped into the entry, thrusting out his arm to ward off the blow he saw crashing down. The tomahawk slashed his forearm and thudded upon the head of Ondessonk. The guide sent Honatteniate reeling into a corner and with another blow the murderer smashed the skull of Ondessonk. Fr. Jogues lay as he fell, crumpled at the doorway of the lodge. The moment was still. No one spoke. The braves leaned over the bleeding head and the prostrate form. They whispered in awed tones that Ondessonk was dead.' Such was the scene on October 18, 1646 near sunset in the entrance to the cabin of the Bear, in the Mohawk village of Osserenon, where the 'Blackrobe', Isaac Jogues was martyred for Jesus Christ and His Holy Catholic Church. Three centuries later, on June 29th, 1930, he along with two of his French comrades were raised to the altars by Pope Pius XI. The life of St. Isaac (named Ondessonk 'bird of prey' by the Huron) is a fascinating tale of adventure, discipline, purity, courage, determination, selflessness and inexhaustible love. This book should be required reading for every Catholic school-boy and Fr. Jogues should be held up as a model of what it means to live the holy life of a suffering servant. Author Francis Talbot, S.J. frames the history of St. Isaac's time extremely well, providing background information on Isaac's family, the political and social history of Orleans, France, and the intellectual and spiritual rigors involved in the formation of 17th Century Jesuits. The detailed account of what it was like for a 'Blackrobe' to live among the native tribes in New France is as harrowing as it is compelling - 'Blackrobe' being the name Indian tribes gave to the Jesuit missionaries who came to them wearing the distinct black cassock of the Catholic priest. Talbot's writing is seamless as it moves from scene to scene, lingering here and there to let the savagery of the Iroquois take hold, sweeping the reader into the narrative and never dealing in caricature. The Hurons, Mohawks, and Algonquins we meet are not stock characters from some early Hollywood movie: they have names and personalities. They are capable of acts of great courage and tenderness, as well as the horrendously Satanic acts that fill much of the story.' -- John from Amazon. Bookseller Inventory # 43643
