Description:

1/40. Folio. XIII, [5], 318, 361, [1]pp. First volume magnificently bound and signed twice by Pagnant, the prestigious Parisian binder who was active between 1876 and 1916: Full gilt and black-stamped crushed full brown morocco with a stunning 9 x 4 1/2" embossed leather portrait of Moses at center of front panel. Gilt lettering and decoration on spine. Raised bands. Top edge gilt. Dentelles. Decorative moire endpapers. Second volume bound in burgundy crushed morocco with a 10 x 7 13/16" embossed copper plate depicting Moses holding the Ten Commandments at center of front panel. Gold lettering and decoration on spine. Raised bands. Top edge gilt. Decorative endpapers. Both volumes have their original wrappers bound in. Pictorial titles in two states protected with tissue-guards. Mounted sepia-tone photographic portrait of J-James Tissot in first volume. Ornamental initials and tailpieces executed in pen and ink. Illustrated title pages protected with tissue-guards. Each volume is housed in a large 3/4 dark brown morocco over brown cloth clamshell box, with gold lettering on spine. Raised bands. This exquisite edition of the Old Testament contains 360 splendid mounted color, b/w, and duo-tone illustrations in the text by J.-James Tissot, and 40 plates in three states, sepia-tone, partly hand-colored, and finished colored state. Plates protected with captioned tissue-guards. Paper size 15 3/4 x 13 inches; image size varies (ca 8 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches.) In his later life, Tissot turned to religious topics, treating them with a degree of topographic and archeological allusion. A distinguished Pre-Raphaelite artist, Tissot's inspiration for his remarkable biblical illustrations comes from his transformative religious experience in the Parisian church of Saint-Sulpice in 1885. It caused him to abandon his successful life as a painter of British and French society life to travel to Egypt, Syria, and Palestine in 1886-1887, and again in 1889 where he visited all of the Holy sites. The ultimate goal of these travels was to produce a series of paintings for an illustrated biography of Jesus, and this later illustrated monumental Bible. This copy is one of the 40 printed on 'papier à la cuve.' Binding of first volume rubbed along joints. Very minor age-toning along paper margin. Minor and sporadic creasing on a few tissue-guards. Text in French. Clamshell boxes, Bindings, wrappers and interior in overall very good condition. Bookseller Inventory #
