About this title

Synopsis:

In 1950's New Orleans, a recent parolee debates going home, and a white nurse who had a child with a black man contemplates raising her son in a white world. Karen Palmer's debut novel describes in heart-wrenching detail the spiritual centers of people and the critical epiphanies that determine destiny. Regional author appearances.

Review:

In this, her first novel, Karen Palmer does an excellent job in her storytelling and in her depictions of the variety of characters, lifestyle, and landscape in Louisiana, where the novel is set. Harlan Desonnier, released from prison at the story's onset, faces the demons of his past as a prisoner; his former home life, which he believes was destroyed by a rival; a daughter he refuses to acknowledge; and the deeply denied truth about what happened on the day of his wife's death. His life and quest intertwine with Father Frank, a priest on the edge who imagines that saving others will save himself, and Glory Wiltz, a nurse at New Orleans's overcrowded Charity Hospital who faces loss of custody of her beautiful biracial child.
