Drawn from various volumes of the Essex Institute Historical Collections, these books offer a detailed history and study of the maritime trade from Salem, Massachusetts, discussing ships, sailors and voyages. Volumes contain: a history of the pepper trade with the island of Sumatra; a history of the "George," "Glide," "Taria Topan," and "St. Paul," in trade with Calcutta, East Coast of Africa, Madagascar and the Philippine Islands; A history of the "Astrea," "Mindoro," "Sooloo," "Panay," "Dragon," "Highlander," "Shirley," and "Formosa," with some account of their masters, and other reminiscences of Salem shipmasters; a history of the European, African, Australian and South Pacific Islands trade as carried on by Salem merchants, particularly the firm of N.L. Rogers and Brothers. All in about VERY GOOD condition with general uneven moderate fading, minor scuffing and a few small spots of soiling. Extremities bumped. Volume four foxed in the interior.
