Book housed in its green cloth chemise, with gold lettering to spine. The chemise is housed in a matching green cloth slipcase.Originally published in 1892, "Salle 6" (Ward No 6) is a short story written by Russian writer Anton Chekhov. Set in a provincial mental asylum, the story explores the philosophical conflict between Ivan Gromov, a university-educated patient, and Dr. Andrei Ragin, the director of the asylum. Gromov denounces the injustice surrounding him, while Dr. Ragin, so disillusioned by the "uselessness" of his task, neglects to visit the wards and becomes indifferent to his patients.This limited edition is splendidly illustrated with nine lithographs by Tonny Kristians, a Dutch-born French Surrealist painter and drafstman whose career spanned from the 1920s through to the 1970s.One of 330 copies on Rives paper B.F.K., of which this is No. 302.Slipcase frayed, rubbed along edges and lacking its bottom flap. Ex-Library copy, with bookplate on inside of chemise's front cover, and on inside of front wrap (Occidental College Library). Text in French.
