About this Item

1st 1906 edition, flaws displayed in the photos; all illustrations present, but the plate called-for at page 225 is at page 30; William Rainey (illustrator). Original red cloth with gilt lettering and design. This is a very scarce true first edition; SEE PHOTOS FOR MORE INFO. THE PHOTOS CONSTITUTE A PART OF THE BOOK DESCRIPTION SO PLEASE REVIEW THEM CAREFULLY. The author has used a fictional setting to tell "The Story of the Rubber Slaves of the Congo" (sub-title) in which the harvesting of rubber there was carried out by inflicting "an appalling amount of suffering upon the hapless negroes." It was estimated that 100,000 Congo natives died annually as a consequence of the rubber trade and revelations of these deaths eventually caused so much international condemnation that the lot of the native people would be improved. Strang wrote this adventure book for boys to aid this cause. 'Hebert Strang' was a pseudonym used by George Herbert Ely (18661958) and Charles James L'Estrange (18671947), co-editors in the Juveniles Department of Oxford University Press from 1907 until 1939, and the authors of adventure stories for boys. Samba is about the rubber slaves of Congo. Leopold, Belgium. On the Trail of the Arabs is about the slave trade and fighting to eradicate it. Settlers and Scouts in set in Kenya, in the highlands, ivory, ranching, natives, scouting spoor. Bookseller Inventory # 125
