About this Item

This is the family bible of Caldwell, Walker, Belcher, and Whitney families. This 1816 bible was originally owned by Samuel Belcher (1788-1850) and his wife Anna G. Caldwell (1799-1834). The frontispiece is inscribed as the property of "Anna G. Caldwell". The "Birth records" include the births of her parents - William Caldwell (1764-1830) and Mary Walker (1763-1851). Also recorded are the births and most of the deaths of her 6 siblings - Samuel B. J. Caldwell, Charlotte W., John B., Samuel R., Anna Gray, Phebe W., and Maria Eliza Caldwell - who were born between 1790 and 1804. Also recorded among the 'Births" are Anna G. Caldwell's and Samuel Belcher's 7 children - Mary Elizabeth, William C., James M., Isaac S., Mary Justina, Charlotte Mariah, and Harriet Roberta Belcher, who were born between 1819 and 1832. 4 more births are recorded - from the marriage of Charlotte Maria Belcher and Nathan Whitney in 1864 - William Belcher Whitney and Edward Samuel Whitney, who were born in 1866 and 1867. 2 of their daughters' births are recorded - Margaret Quayle Whitney and Miriam Kerruish Whitney, who were born in 1900 and 1901. I believe that one of these daughters married a noted musical composer and had 4 children (not recorded in the bible). There is one page of marriages, 2 pages of births, and one page of deaths. The bible is bound in full, worn calf with dried and cracked hinges. There are 924 pages, lacking part of the "Table of Proper Names'. I believe that these families mostly lived in the Vermont area. There are 12 entries of marriages, 22 entries of births, and 14 entries of deaths. The last inscription is for the birth of Miriam Kerruish Whitney in 1901, who was the great-granddaughter of Anna G. Caldwell (Belcher). Bookseller Inventory # 12032
