About this Item

206 p. Includes illustrations. Dark blue cloth over boards. Gold spine titles. Gold jacket w/ black titles, gray machinery reproduced images. Biography of an individual and American manufacturing roots: In 1789, a young man with a photographic memory of machinery detail for cotton spinning, arrived in New York from England. Protective of its new manufacturing methods by machine, England prohibited the export of machines and the emigration of its mechanics and manufacturers. Young Samuel Slater had been an apprentice in England's town of Belper, and had learned much about the innovative Arkwright machinery. Put in touch with Moses Brown of Providence RI, Samuel went to work in building an Arkwright. MIT researcher and engineer E H Cameron here offers Samuel's story, from his boyhood in England to his eventual leadership in the American cotton industry. The American Saga Series (from back jacket) offers the "revelation of American enterprise as a dynamic factor in 'the American way of life' and as a contribution to the political, economic and cultural health of the world. It serves as a corrective to loose economic and social propaganda and teaching, at both high school and college levels, as well as among general readers." Very good in very good dust jacket. Sun-fade to jacket spine. Top jacket edge wear; small chips to spine ends of jacket. Sun-fade, book lower edge. 1st end paper glue residue, not sticky, perhaps from bookplate. No library markings. First edition. No additional printings mentioned. Bookseller Inventory # Alibris.A0190004501

Store Description

Hi, Folks ... Mom said, 'I need to downsize'. Moving to assisted living, what she couldn't take included 8,000-plus books & records. A decade later, my upcountry barn is bursting. Books multiply as others recycle priorities. I now have 30,000 or more books (not yet all online) looking for good homes, and my learning curve has been a roller coaster. I celebrate word-crafters, thought-tumblers, laughter ... the arts of communication at every turn. I preserve, protect, and share. I am also Hedgehog Publishing, 'Words & Pictures by & for Folks with Prickly Backs, Soft Bellies, & Small Brains'.
