Stockholm, E. Lemkes boktryckeri, 1884. 40 pp. Uncut in contemporary wrappers. A couple of minor paper losses to wrappers. Spine worn and with glue residues. Rear cover with a couple of minor glue stains.Zetterlund I:30. Rare first book edition of Strindberg's antimilitaristic short-story about the leutenant in the reserve von Bleichroden and his pangs of conscience, which was first published earlier in 1884, both in the Danish magazine "Ude og hjemme" and as a serial in the Swedish periodical "Tiden", where the future Swedish prime minister Hjalmar Branting was newly-appointed editor-in-chief. The present edition was published through the agency of Branting by The Swedish Peace and Arbitration Society. The statutes of the Society are printed on the inside of the covers. The short story was reprinted several times and the eight edition was published by the request of Strindberg shortly before his death. Seller Inventory # 32501A
